Sensationalism sells advertising space. Most news agencies, especially the successful ones, have the first priority of making money, not in keeping you informed. If anything, they have reasons to not report quite a few things that would distress the corporations that buy advertisement space or could get politicians to revoke their press pass so that there is a line they usually won't cross (or the story gets crushed fast if they do).
