I'm thinking of getting a new laptop.
I don't need it at the moment for university or anything, but the thing is my old laptop is a bit outdated in terms of performance etc. and has no battery.
Preferably I want something that's cheap-mid price range (i.e. not the apple product price range...) has the performance of an ordinary laptop but also has battery life to be portable.
suggestions?

You will probably get a lot of conflicting suggestions but from my own personal experience, I would go for an HP/Compaq. I have had three so far, one a netbook, and all have given my stirling service with no major problems.

Don't get one with Windows 8 that has all sorts of problems that seem to have been sorted out in Windows 8.1.
Asus also make some pretty good stuff:

I am very happy with my Sony VAIO. Steer clear of HP and you should be alright. Be sure to consider the screen-size when you find one you like; small for portable reasons, but still large enough to be useful.
Oh and older models of AMD processors used to get really hot. This is supposedly fixed in the newer models, but I would still avoid buying one.

As I said, you'll get conflicting opinions!

If you are talking portability, you would be mad if you went past a tablet weather it be Android or Windows. They are rapidly catching up with the flexibility and speed of a mid priced laptop. The battery life of tablets I believe, but not 100% sure, are equal if not better.
I love AMD and I always build with AMD, but for laptops and Tablets, I believe that Intel are streets ahead.

In order to recommend a laptop you need to know what you will be using it for.
Is it just emails, facebook and internet?
Do you need Office or just word?
Do you need to run special software on it?
All of these are relevant in terms of selecting one and in terms of price.
Have a think about it yourself first but if it is the first option, then most entry level models or even of a little higher specs would suffice. There are several free anti virus and anti spyware software available for download too.

Well that and I read that AMD may be getting out of making x86 based processors, which knocks them out of the windows market altogether, and out of a large amount of the linux market anymore, since most distros focus on x86 architecture.
I eventually see ARM replacing x86, so maybe in the long term it'll be better. Maybe also in the short term with the mobile market. But for laptops, Intels the way to go now.
And this coming from someone that always bought AMD as well.

I think a VAIO with the battery sheet is a great option. My mom owns a VAIO S, and even though she hates Windows 8, she loves the laptop. It's pretty good when it comes to performance, and the battery sheet is a great addition.
If you could spend a bit more, I'd totally recommend the 2013 MacBook Air (refurbished ones have a great discount and are as good as new). I own one and carry it everywhere, I don't even feel it's in my backpack because it's very light and I don't have to keep searching for a power outlet because I can go through a day or two on a charge. I even sold my iPad because I simply wasn't using it anymore.

I know you said not a Apple laptop, but I got mine awhile back from EBay,it was almost brand new and have been very happy with it,so good deals can be found.
