A little background here: I came out to a few of my closest friends, who are gay as well, a little over two years ago, and my mother as well as my next door neighbor just last year. I've had a few heterosexual relationships sometime ago that were short and awkward. They just never really seemed to fit me and always felt strange. I've always involved myself with so many activities and volunteering that I literally just put my love life on permanent hold. I just turned 45 in March, but feel like a 45 year old virgin.
This is still all very new to me, but at 45, I felt the need to stop being afraid, plus living alone was getting beyond old. I started out last year to find that special someone and stuck myself out on Plenty of Fish and Ok Cupid. This proved to be a disaster. I found someone online, and we seemed to hit it off fairly well, on least via chat and phone. We then decided to meet at a restaurant (bad) and I had a horrible time. This guy smelled like a cologne factory, making it very difficult to even breathe. He sent and received texts at the table and was making excuses to get to the bathroom to presumably make calls to hook up with someone else. Our previous conversations were of kindling a relationship and not just hooking up. When it was quite clear to me that it wasn't going to work out. We walked back to my truck after dinner and said our goodbyes. We'd only seen each other for an hour and he was lip locking me in the parking lot trying to get me going?! This actually kind of freaked me out and set me back even further, enough to make me delete the recently started accounts.
Fast forward: After a bit of calming down and getting my nerve back up, I signed up with Match.com with little success. It was then that I decided to involve myself with gay activity groups, and avoid the one on one blind dates. Since I have a great love of the outdoors, I joined a gay hiking group. I figured "What's the worst that could happen? If you don't find anybody, at least have a fun time out on a hike, and maybe meet some new friends". The first meet was great. I met about 10 guys of various ages that were both fun to be with, and that I felt comfortable being around.
The second meet was even better, and that's when I met my boyfriend. We've gone out for about 2 months now, and have had several 4 hour phone conversations, lots of walks, gone wine tasting, gone out to dinner, and have had meals at each other's houses. We both have very similar interests and share pretty much the same views, although we're not carbon copies of each other, it's uncanny how very much alike we are. We've had lots of hugs and kisses, and some snuggling together. Not rushing into anything here, and that's fine by me. We just love being together and I relish every moment of time that I spend with him.
That's all for now. Sorry for sounding like a giddy teenager on a first date. I'm just very new to this and am crossing my fingers that I've finally found my significant other. I've always liked this forum and the group of people here that make it what it is.
