There are times I think the progress of gay rights is too painfully slow in my own country, but this puts in perspective that things could be worse.

Whenever you have deep seeded religious beliefs controlling the politics of a country,,,, you will have persecution of innocent people who do not fit that religious mold.

It is sad that Egypt is turning a corner in the wrong direction. I have visited that country many times several years ago, while I was in the military and always found it to be a friendly place where you can enjoy yourself without fear of being persecuted because of some darn religious belief.

When religious zealots controls the government, civil liberties will always be curbed because they are contradictory to some religious doctrine.

That is why a lot of countries try and have a separation of Church and State.
