A suprising reply from a surprising source
#1
Like just about everyone I receive SCAM e-mail promising me millions of dollars in exchage for my bank account details. Recently I received one that ended:

Be informed that this directive is from the office of the presidency Federal Republic of Nigeria and also in agreement with the United States Government, International monetary Fund, United Nations fund oversight office and the Federal Reserve Bank New York

Highly convincing I'm sure you'll agree!

Usually what I do instead of just deleting them, I report them for the appropriate domain; Gmail, Yahoo, Hotmail etc. This one came from yandex.com of which I have never heard but I looked them up on http://abuse.net/lookup.phtml. I duly reported the SCAM and was surprised to receive an automated reply in Russian, telling me that my message had been received. Even more surprising was that I received a very polite message today saying:

Thank you for informing us about a spam message. The reported account has been closed.

Sincerely yours, Platon

Hotmail is the only one that always sends out replies. Gmail, Yahoo never do. I really hadn't expected a reply from Yandex so that's why I was surprised.

don't believe that just because you received an email saying the account was closed that it actually has been. or that the Nigerians sending it haven't already got a few hundred working email accounts.

I think on email services like Gmail and Yahoo, those buttons to report spam are really just something to make their users feel better and rarely does anyone at Google or Yahoo look at them. Maybe if they get enough reports about spam originating from the same address, but other than that no.

I don't press "report" buttons but use these for Yahoo, Gmail and Hotmail:
