The Walking Dead
NativeSon Wrote:Yeah, odd narrative choices throughout. The writing for this franchise is never consistently top notch; character development seems a real struggle at times. But when it's good it's good--I mostly just watch for the zombies.

P.S. Kinda funny when Nick loses his 'Angeleno' accent.
Yeah, I noticed the Queen's English stick out a couple of times from Nick. I'm sort of surprised the director let those cuts stay in because it does pull the focus away from the scene and toward the actor playing the role. I didn't bring it up before because I bitched so much in that last post.

I only got to see the last 40 minutes.....got in late and was tired from a long day that started at 2 AM...and still..I noticed a lot of the stuff you mentioned Steve...and it was annoying me.....

I remember thinking while was dozing off...maybe they have a real bad editing team....

Both the mom and dad turned out to be stupid. They already saw the drug dealer turn into a zombie...

It would take me 5 seconds to figure it out. The first dead person I saw get up and walk would convince me......I'd like to think it would convince other people too....

Of course I still want to watch the whole thing while I am awake but I will have to wait until repeats tomorrow...

The part I did see pretty much annoyed me though.....and now I want them all to be eaten and find some new survivors.......

Hi All!

I haven't been on much lately ( I wasn't even able to watch the first two episodes until last night!). My husband had the first of his two surgeries and has been home and in bed for the past 3 weeks. He just started back to work, going in for "half-days" yesterday (Thank You Baby Jesus!😂😇Wink Meanwhile, I am still mid-progress on opening my food service business (my order from China is 3 weeks late 😡Wink and I go in today to pay my rent on the commercial kitchen I am leasing. So things have been hectic...

HOWEVER, y'all KNOW I have been going insane trying to find the time to watch! Well, now that I have, I feel like a burden has been lifted from my shoulders! Such Sespense! Oi!

Did anyone else get kinda of a 28 Days Later vibe in the first scene, in the Church? I felt like there was a little nod to that feeling in those first few scenes, and Yes! That cute little heroine addict, very Gilbert Grape!

I kinda get the mom. I have had to deal with addicts in my immediate family, and there is a fine line between helping and enabling... Now on her going to steal drugs from the school...? Well, I am just pissed that after ALL THAT they went through, they ended up leaving without the food! And when she asked him if he wanted to come home with her..? PFFT! That is a Blond-Leading-Blond moment if I ever saw one!

ALSO, it kinda pisses me off that we have to wait an extra week before we get the next episode! More cheap-ass Suspense!

All in All, I think I am gonna Love it. At least as much as is possible without Daryl....

I Know! As much as I bitched about it.... 2 Weeks! Damn! My mom wouldn't break in somewhere to get my fix for FTWD. I hope Mark will clean up after I have my grand mal seizure next week. Damn AMC.

Damn! No wonder we haven't seen you around. You've been busier than a one-legged grass hopper in a jumping contest. I'm glad your husband is doing well. When's his next surgery? Good luck with the business, btw.

No I'd hadn't thought about 28 Days Later, but now that you mention it that is the whole vibe from the pilot show, I just didn't see it before. Weird. You got that right on.

Yeah, I get the mom helping her kid avoid deadly withdrawal from going cold turkey. But why did she let the kid take the oxy like it was going to be his next fix? (It looked like he was going to snort it, or inject it) She should have made him swallow the thing and let the extended relief the drug was going to give him do the job. She bloody well should have known that's not how you ween a junkie down. Made me crazy. And leavin' the food I thought was real stupid since she went to all the trouble of killing a friend to try and get it 'n all. Headscratch

When they announced the two week thing at the end of the show I was like, WTF? Then I remembered the holiday weekend. I'll bet producers don't want people to miss because of last minute vacations or kids moving into colleges 'n such. Damn Labor Day!

Glad you're back Beaux. Missed you around here.

I'd say that was a pretty fair and accurate assessment. It ain't bitching if it's true. Smile

I get it, it was a holiday, but still kinda ridiculous that the show already took a break. It's only what--an eight episode season? Way to kill the momentum.

Yeah I can bitch, piss and moan with the best of 'em. And that's not including sex noises either. Laugh

Actually its only six episodes. Just enough to pique your interest and get us to the premiere of TWD on October 11th. A whole season of FTWD has been ordered for next year.

it's already too late and I had to turn on the lights while watching "the dog" episode.

Well...way above average writing and character development. I am not sure if it is gonna be the norm or maybe just good editing..time will tell...

The riot scenes were frightening...and the quiet neighborhood getting their first taste...and the "clean up crew" at the end...very convincing...

So far though....the only one I really like its the father from the Barber Shop. I like characters who are strong (and who aren't stupid). I mean really...one dead person gets up and walks...I am soooooooooooooooo on board. No one needs to tell me shit. I am almost glad when the weak ones and non believers die because it is painful to watch them.

I like TWD so much better...but this could be a contender depending on how they finish the last three episodes...

I was better prepared to feel complete frustration for tonight's episode. "The Dog" was better in many ways, although it felt kind of predictable too.

Travis as the super pacifist stereotypical Californian is funny, especially in the face of the apocalypse going on around him. "You know how I feel about guns." It was frustratingly fun. That scene also served the gun lobby of this country quite well. It is odd holding on to a liberal stance on gun control all the while rooting for Rubén teaching Lorenzo about shot guns. I almost didn't notice the irony until peacenik Travis walks in all stern and judgmental. As if he didn't remember a gun pretty much saved his life the evening before.

The conversation Travis had with his ex-wife Lisa reveals Travis' Achilles' heel, which is that he wants to save everyone from harm. Lisa is completely matter-of-fact with him about what is going to happen to Griselda and her injury, and he's just reacts by saying that it won't happen. Lisa: "Who's gonna stop it? You?" Her blunt candor was refreshing and funny. He's very Pollyanna, always believing that order will be restored, even saying "The cavalry's here" at the end of the episode. His character has been written really naively; anyone with half a mind should realize that an army "in charge" scenario has disaster written all over it. Viewers are left to believe that he is drawing comfort from any last hope available.

Madison was also interesting in that episode. Her character really began to evolve. She's had time to process killing off her co-worker at the school, and the light started to dawn when their zombie neighbor invades the house and she watches the dude stay standing after half his face is blown off. Then Madison witnesses a close friend, another neighbor she has known for years, changed into something she may not know what to call, but she knows that it's not normal. The reality of this situation is beginning to set in. And she knows Travis well enough to understand that he wouldn't have what it takes to kill her if she's ever infected. Madison instead has to ask the ex-wife Lisa to do it.

The writer of this episode must have had someone close to them who was a substance abuser, because the son's (Nick) character behavior is nearly flawless. The addicts I've known over the years usually have a pretty good way of separating the BS from the truth of the people immediately around them (at least when they're not blown sky high). One of their main problems is that they don't have much, if any, self perception.

Nick already knows the deal; these 'people' are dead. And he's finally blunt about it. I think he was just fed up with everyone dancing around what was obvious. There are only so many times he needs to see people eating people and dogs, or sustain fatal wounds and still live before he twigs on the reality of what is happening.

Yet Nick has no self perception. "He's the expert on how to wean himself off drugs. Why did his mother give half his supply to Griselda (the mother from the barber shop) when he needs them. He needs his 'medicine'. Nuh-uh. That isn't 'medicine. That's your fix. He's already past the worst of the fatal physical effects of coming down. What he's faced with now is the sweating blood nastiness of actually weaning off the drugs. At some unconscious level he may know this, but he's still exhibiting classic addictive behavior. Travis' wife, the nurse, should be handling Nick's dry out from drugs. Whoever wrote Nick's character knew his stuff.

There was good tension in this episode. I do think the military coming in at the end was a little predictable (not just because it was in the teaser from last week). It felt to easy to write in a military presence taking over, but maybe that's just me. The "power corrupts by absolute power" episode(s) are next.

I liked it. I would have liked a few more gruesome scares, but it was better overall. We'll see where the next three episodes take us. In the meantime I'm looking forward to October 11th more and more.

Oh yeah! That's Daniel Salazar and he's a pretty great actor. He takes that writing and that character as far as the dialogue will let him. Even if the character don't know exactly what's going on, he's more than willing to do what needs to be done. Yeah, I'm on board with Rubén.

It's funny because in reality I have great empathy -up to a point- for the weak and disenfranchised. In both Walking Dead series I have so little tolerance for the idiots who refuse to realize that the rules have changed. Those people can't die (or evolve) fast enough.
