I am posting this because I can. I realize that it may be offensive. I realize I may get flamed. I realize that this may appear to be anti-christian.

C'est la vie. And yes, I am not aligned with any Christian faith.

2% of the cathaholic clergy are paedophiles. Perhaps it is the mass media storm surrounding historic incidents but it seems that this number is low. But seeing that the total number would be 8000 priests, maybe it would be appropriate. I don't know.

The article does state that in the general population the rate is less than 5 % so perhaps the numbers quoted for the cathaholics is accurate.

Any thoughts?

I don't exactly think it's "offensive" to state the truth, well, if you believe the information anyway.

But it does seem like media hype plays a role in characterizing priests as pedophiles, though for the goal of hoping that it garners attention for them.

Still, that means that 2% of priests, people who are in charge of a particular church family, may have the ability to sexually abuse children which would be uncomfortable for many families entrusting their kids in the authorities of their faith.

I'm glad that as a former Catholic (not anymore) I won't have to worry about this for the rest of my life if I have kids. Of course, if 2% of Catholic priests have these tendencies, it's not too comforting to know that it's what I can probably expect of the general population as well. :/

Well if the rest of the world if 5% and the priesthood is only 2%, better let the kids stay at Father ______________'s place, its a wee bit safer - statistically speaking.

No one goes on and on and on about the percentage of doctors that use their profession in sexually aggressive ways - and if that other statistic of about 5% holds true and if we consider the millions of doctors in the world...

The man who molested my mom for years was the preacher who tried to save my Grandma...he was Baptist

The man who raped me was a minister in the MCC Church (gay church) I DO mean rape...nothing consensual and quite violent.

I think the issue isn't just the Holy Nature (expanded upon this is that people would put an inherent trust into a priest), but also that they have time and again been caught lying about and denying known truths. Had they come out and gotten rid of the known abusers and then made public their concern for the welfare of children, people would have a very different attitude.

Can anyone clarify: is the 2% before the mass "cleaning of house" or after? Since the breakage of the scandal out of the Diocese of Boston, it seems that most dioceses have cleared out those priests accused of abuse.

8000 pedophile priests... lets guess 24,000 victims molested... seems like a huge appalling crime doesn't it?

In the areas of Africa where the catholic church is strongest 1.4 MILLION will die of AIDS in 2014.... all because condoms are bad according to the man in the white bathrobe and silly hat.

Does that change the perspective? Why isn't the pope talking about AIDS deaths in parts of Africa, Latin America and Asia where they are strongest ?
