Rocky Horror is a cult classic with a huge cult following.

In HS, a few of my friends suckered me into going to a midnight movie showing where they did a stage performance in sync with the movie. It was some sort of special anniversary night and the theme was reverse underwear night...so all the audience members were encouraged to come dressed in underwear, only all the guys had to wear a bra and panties and the girls had to wear tighty whities and t-shirts. Because it was my first time there, I was a Rocky Horror virgin and was required to be brought up on stage with the rest of the virgins to become part of the show and at some point get molested on stage by someone (somewhat traumatizing to an innocent little 16 year old.)

Long story short, my crotch and ass were crabbed countless times throughout the night by some of the actors, audience and my friends, it was fun. Felt more sorry for the dude who played Rocky Horror the creation, since he was only wearing a small gold bathing suit and apparently straight, had to dance around on stage with a bunch of really hot chicks, ended up getting a really huge embarrassing boner halfway through the show. No one minded at all though, my friends were pointing and laughing, suppose it was a bonus (pun fully intended).

During the first couple of years after coming out I went completely gay. Very soon all my friends were gay, I'd go only to gay bars, became a member in a gay sports club, went to gay volleyball tournaments all over the world. I became a little active in gay issues, would go see movies with my gay friends or alone, went swimming in a local pool that was "gay" once or twice a week. After a while I would always meet people I knew when I went out. I marched in several gay pride parades. I would go to parties my friends organized and meet mostly gay people. And I had sex with men, not enough I felt, but a total slut by today's standards.

At my friends' parties I'd talk to straights as well, but never became friends with anybody. With the straight world I only interacted at length at work or with my family. And I didn't miss a thing.

You probably think that this is a cautionary tale, that someday I woke up and realized what I'd been missing? What an empty life I was leading?
Nope, I still only have gay friends, am a member in a gay sports club, a gay book club, married my Prince Charming, have a gay personal trainer, and a gay doctor. I still march in parades and am welcoming everyone who wants to be part of that world.

I never considered myself part of "the Gay Scene", whatever nebulous group that is that everybody is so adamantly opposed to. I didn't date men just to have sex with them. I didn't lie to anybody to have sex with them. I didn't ruin myself for brand label clothes. I didn't make it to every party and don't think I missed anything. I've looked at the in-crowd and it-boys and wished to be friends/fcuk buddies/husbands with them and when I didn't I moved on.

I've tried drugs 3 times, only once was interesting. I'm still a total lightweight when it comes to alcohol, I always had to drive home, so diet coke or seltzer it was for me at the bars or clubs and nobody ever complained. I've had 3 bouts of STDs, all cured, 2 with crabs, got rid of them as well and remain HIV neg.

So, gay culture is nothing to run away from, nothing dirty, sick or twisted. Of course, it can be, so you have to be responsible and make good choices. Give it a chance, look at many different things and embrace the parts you find appealing. Try to meet people (face to face, ahem) and make friends. You can never have too many real-life friends.

Being gay is not for Sissies.

I don't think there is a right answer for everyone...it is an individual thing....

My idea of gay culture is THIS

I lived and breathed this (almost exclusively) for many many years .... longer than some of you have been alive. I LOVED it but a lot of gay men can't stand it and/or want no part of it.

I liked the interaction with thousands of other gay men...the energy...the vibe...the comraderie....the conversation....the dancing...the music...the freedom to express yourself..

Now my idea of gay culture is party of two amidst a sea of straight people LOL...and that is cool too.

My hope is that "gay culture" will one day mean that LGBT people are comfortable in their own skin...across the board.
