Londoner that pic is part of one of the most embarrassing eras in US history. Here in my state, South Dakota, the Womens Christian Temperance Union was in full force fifteen years before it became a state in 1889. In that era this territory was the true "wild west" of movie fiction. There were still wars with the Sioux/Lakota tribes, General George Custer, Wild Bill Hickock, Calamity Jane. The towns of Deadwood, Lead, (LEED) Sturgis, Spearfish and Rapid City were the wild west of movies but they were far from the uncivilized lawless dens of criminals Hollywood created.

WCTU is still remembered here as an invasion of nosey self righteous bitches who caused more trouble than any outlaws, native Americans or blizzards. The end result of their prohibition of liquor was the birth of organized crime as a multi billion dollar industry.
