You can not recognize something as being a strength of character without having something in mind to compare that is seen as a lack of character, so it would seem claiming abstinence is a character strength would indicate having sex is a lack of character and there is no way I can ever agree that would be true.

True... it's like saying Not Breathing builds character. Wink

... and in all this abstinence talk, is that just copulation/fornication (some form of getting off with another human being), or does that include masturbation too?

Wow! It's nice to see Iceplank and Brog making great sense at the same time when talking about sex.

For me, sex is the tool we humans are given to help us exalt the person who is responsible for all of our joy in life. When I do it my needs are secondary to my partners. It is my way to I want to see him melt into a helpless dazed limp body from the pleasure I want to give him.

Aside from the sad, lonely act of masturbation, I haven't had sex since the last millennium, or if you prefer since the last century. about 16 years, or 192 months or 832 weeks or 5844 days.... I'm uncertain which way to present this to make it sound better and not as sad....

Its been about 16 years since the last time I enjoyed the body of another human being.

Oh it gets sadder, the first 12 years of that period I was in a relationship with someone who, unlike me, was getting lots of sex with well over a hundred other men.

So yeah I guess one can survive without sexual contact with another human being.

I think I need to go take a bath and play with some razor blades now.... Cry

I disagree. I think masturbation is one of the best gifts to man. Being able to pleasure, and love yourself is a prerequisite to being able to pleasure and love someone else. If you can't figure yourself out, how is anyone else supposed to?

Not to mention, with masturbation and a little imagination/fantasy, you can have ANYONE you want to, whenever you want. You can BE anyone you want. There's absolutely nothing sad about masturbation in my book!

Now what's all this 16 year talk? What's stopping you from sharing your toys?

there's nothing admirable about abstinence and self-denial. it's pointless. if you naturally don't want sex (??) that's another thing, but if you have to repress yourself in order not to have sex, that just makes you fake. no matter how morally high you try to elevate it, still fake.

not to mention, sex is amazing and part of a healthy way of life. you have to have a few screws loose upstairs to want to abstain from it.

Hmm 12 of those years I was in what I now laughingly call a monogamous relationship. Mind I wasn't informed that monogamy ended when the sex ended. Its not until the end of the relationship that I discovered who was and who wasn't actually monogamous. Never guess why it is I decided to end the relationship....

Since then I have been halfheartedly seeking a love match... I am not satisfied by casual sex. I might get off, but it leaves me feeling worse than instead of better than.

I am a base, vile creature. The extent of my philosophically sexual character-building goes only as far as trying to stretch some part of me around some massive random manhood. To my credit, I am willing to broaden my horizons, so to speak.

Let's hear it for horizons! There is too much looking backward through the telescope.
