Acting is just not her thing and it looks as if she may have finally realized that. I do have to say though that while Desperately Seeking Susan was not a great movie, it was not an unwatchable movie. It was also not great acting, but I don't think it came off as so horrible because she was just having fun with it and not taking herself seriously. Same with her role in A League of their Own. When she tried to portray herself as a serious actress, that is when it highlighted her inability to act. I forgot about her role in Body of Evidence. That movie actually makes The Next Best Thing seem like a masterpiece.
I haven't seen -any- that have outright wow'd me other than Boy's Don't Cry. I would honestly love to see movies in which the main character(s) just so happen to be gay and that not be the entire basis of the movie.
How many movies are there where the plot exists entirely to tell us the story of how the hero is a *gasp* straight man? Give me a great movie, wonderful acting, edge of your seat plot...with a love story woven in involving two men and -then- I might be impressed.

Off topic: That's what I love about Torchwood. It's by no means great TV, but the hero (although officially omnisexual) only sleeps with guys, while being with a team dealing with extraterrestrials.
One thing that bothers me is all the heterosexual, big Hollywood actors that want to play a gay role and then go and over the top in 'gaying it up,' leaving the impression that is how all gay men are. They get all kinds of acclaim in the press and sometimes even Oscar buzz for these roles as if it's Colin Firth playing a King with a serious speech stammer or Meryl Streep playing a Polish immigrant with a thick accent. If the actor is playing a gay lawyer, why can't he just deliver his lines as he would if he was playing a straight lawyer?

Ditto, Twist. It hit me as ill thought out in terms of continuity and plot. Not uplifting either, although that's not necessarily good criteria for judging the quality of movies.

Boys Don't Cry is a fabulous, if often difficult to watch, film. Hilary Swank won an Oscar for her portrayal of Brandon Teena. Good choice Gideon.

I strongly dislike many gay movies.
Traveling to Olympus, and Gods of Olympus should be illegal and whoever funded them brought up on charges. An Angel Named Billy made me gag violently. Saccharine sweet to the point of causing causing diabetes. My eyes bled. Gone but not Forgotten is terrible, but I have a soft spot for it despite its utter lack of acting skills, miscast characters, plot holes, unrealistic situations, etc. (I have no excuse, it's not a great movie at all.) Another Gay Movie: The Sequel should be avoided at all cost. The original Another Gay Movie (don't confuse the first movie with the second) was kind of fun, but the sequel should have never been made. Burnt Money describes what I spent watching it. The Fluffer was flat, dead boring, nearly impossible to relate to and had porn quality acting. Triple Crossed was ill thought out and made me ill that I spent the time watching it. Longhorns is terrible. Redwoods went nowhere slowly. In The Blood wasn't. Socket was ill conceived, bizarre, and not electric by any standard. Back Soon is a bad movie in so many ways, but unfortunately (I have no excuse), a soft spot for. Rock Haven hit the rocks on the shore and was by no means a haven. Tan Lines is an ugly little movie with little point from Australia. Beverly Kills made me want to kill Beverly. The Hole should have been filled with cement.
There are, in short, too many bad, ill conceived gay related movies to name. And remember, beauty/ugliness is in the eye of the beholder.

Here are a few gay classic movies I happen to enjoy (IMO):
Beautiful Thing, Angels in America (should be required), Big Eden, Love Songs, Love and Human Remains, Come Back to the Five and Dime Jimmy Dean Jimmy Dean, Latter Days, Were the World Mine, Just a Question of Love, Touch of Pink, Shelter, Shortbus, Philadelphia, Get Real, Home for the Holidays, KM.0 (aka Kilometer Zero),Love and Other Disasters, Rent(not as good as the stage pay, but still pretty fab)...
Aike Wrote:It's almost like it's impossible for our collective imagination to picture a happy ending for a female couple. I hope someone with more experience of lesbian films can prove me wrong.
Offhand, Better Than Chocolate, DEBS, and But I'm a Cheerleader come to mind. All 3 are comedies. Some don't like the first one because it got wrapped up in a "don't bet on it" happy ending at the end. Some don't like the second as it's just so silly (similar to the Charlie's Angels movies). Some don't like the last one because they use a lot of stereotypes (though it is more for comedic effect). In case you're curious, the trailers to all 3:
Though try as I have I can't think of one that was NOT a comedy that had a happy ending. I absolutely loved Lost and Delirious but that ending was such a punch in the gut to me that I've never been able to watch it again.
Books are different.
And btw, no one in any Joss Whedon story (such as Buffy the Vampire Slayer) can fall in love and it turn out good, regardless of orientation (and Joss obviously doesn't believe in bisexuality but rather "once you go gay then you can never go back"--unless you count Inara in Firefly, and I'm not sure she actually counts since she's a "professional companion" and even her genuine love life sucked).
CellarDweller Wrote:The most heartbreaking story was 'Paul' and "Billy". I met Paul at one of the gatherings, 70 years old, and long married. As a juvenile he was arrested and sent to a youth-prison, and there he met Billy. The two became a couple right away, and all the other guys in with them knew it. Paul was released before Billy, and forbidden to maintain contact. After two years, Paul couldn't take it anymore, and looked for and found Billy, who was now engaged.
50 years later, he saw Brokeback Mountain, and it all came flooding back. He began a search for Billy, only to find out he had passed away. Paul found Billy's widow, who told him that she knew about the two of them for years, and that she had something for Paul, and envelope her late husband asked her to give Paul if he should come around. Paul got the letter, and there was a small note inside.
Paul
The sweetest days of my life were spent with you.
Go find some grassy place again.
Lay you down and close your eyes.
I'll meet you there.
Billy
.
oh my God I'm gonna weep. That letter. Christ.
I wonder if she read it. But gosh. That's an ache.
Bam Bam & Celiste starring Margaret Chow (who I normally like) was AWFUL. Chocked full of demeaning stereotypes of gay men that I found EXTREAMLY offensive ("OMG! An awful thing has happened! I have to go find a dick to suck!").
Back in the 90s I watched Threesome and I remember hating it. Otherwise, most of the other awful "Gay" movies that I remember have been posted already on this thread by others.
One movie I DID like quite a lot was Get Your Stuff. It's a comedy but it had supposing depth and it really came across as genuine (to me..).
I am generally not a fan of LGBT movies, as most of them have a very bad plot and some boring characters (and everything revolves around sex, sex, and more SEX). Although, I did like Trick from 1999 and Latter Days - The Curiosity of Chance isn't bad either, but kind of hilarious.
But the ones I hate the most is, as many here seem to agree with, Brokeback Mountain. The story itself is okay, but it is like the idea was pretty cheaply accepted: "Wauw, two gay man from the West who cannot be together because it is forwned upon" - like we haven't heard that one before.
Another Gay and Eating Out are just as bad, but mainly because they are so rediculous - and don't get me started on the acting because WAUW that is a catagory of its own!
BUT! Thye prize for the worst LGBT movie (and the worst movie in general) goes to (insert drumroll here): The Fluffer. OH. MY. GOD. I have never seen so much garbage in one movie! At the end of the movie I ended up screaming "I WANT MY LIFE BACK!". Boy, was that awkward when my mother came in asking what I was watching...
