Maybe it's a stupid question but...

I'll ask it anyway

For a long time I've dreamt of teaching Italian in American schools. It seems that moment has finally come. So prior to my NYC visit for CELTA, I've been looking at academic and college programs in New York. There's these two awesome schools (Hunter College and Brooklyn College) that have programs for wannabe Secondary Education teachers of Italian, and I'm seriously thinking of applying for them.

Now: would they accept an Italian into their courses?? Because it sounds a bit illogical to me

At each place you're interested in attending, contact the admissions office and ask your questions directly to them. You can also ask them for the contact information for the department chair of the program that interests you and then also contact that person.

At many schools you would need a Masters in Education to be able to teach in secondary schools.

I don't know that there's a big demand in the US to learn Italian at the high school level. How is your French and Spanish? What other languages do you know? The more languages you could teach, the better your chances of being a foreign language teacher.

Erm, my French is not bad but far from teaching-level knowledge. It's just I've found out tutoring my kids during these last few months and years that this is probably the kind of career I want to pursue.

I know I'm not old but engaging in Undergraduate (with a Graduate program afterwards) programs even sounds silly if you think about it. But I can't do anything about it, it took me some time to figure it out but teaching is what I want to do for a living.

When I was diagnosed with RA, I realized that I had to make a career change. Being self-employed in business that required a lot of time spent on my feet (I owned a restaurant, a B&B, and a catering company), I decided to return to college and for a BS in Biology with a minor in education. I still have two semesters left (basically) before I will be certified to teach high school.
Unfortunately, as my RA continues to negatively affect my health, I have come to the unhappy realization that in all likelihood I will be unable to pursue my initial ambition of teaching high school biology. None-the-less, I have every intention of finishing what I started and once I have finished I will just have to let "the chips fall as they may".
I truly believe that all things in life happen for a reason. Continue to follow your dreams. You never know where they will lead you, but you won't regret it if you give it your best!

Go for it Smile if you feel that this opportunity is calling for you then do it. As long as you have the means, what's the worst that could happen? If it doesn't work out then go back home or move on to plan B, at least you'll have tried.

Thanks for the support, I'm already gathering as much info as I can before I talk to school personnel over there!
