Confession time, not sure if I have mentioned this other than in a PM to East but I also worked in bars for a short while when I was younger... kind of as experiment or adventure given my pretty sheltered upbringing. Every Friday I'd leave my corporate job and drive two states away and work as a barback, sometimes speaker dude, whatever you call it, on Fri and Sat nights. It was fun because I was able to shed all the preconceptions of the people in my "real life" and become this different, much less inhibited (and -- to be frank -- I'm sure they thought slightly trashy) individual. I am not what you would call "VGL" and had a decent, not great, body, but as East said a lot of what goes in bars is what you project, and apparently when I wasn't trying to live up to the expectations of people who "knew" me, I was able to be a lot more confident and approachable. I don't recall actually hooking up all that much, but I think they thought I did. It was a fun experience I don't regret.
