Does Equal Opportunity Employer include us gays too?

I know they include races,gender, disabilities and what not, but I've yet to see it mention gay people. I've tried to research it but had a hard time doing so.

Or at least, not in all the states in the US.

officially yes - unofficially not on your life in the vast majority of work places....that's just my opinion that ive picked up in my working life

but I think that is changing , especially with the younger generation...and in the future they will be running these negative places anyway

Here in Washington state? Yes. But you have to be able to PROVE that you were discriminated against due to your sexuality. Not always an easy task by any means.

Cool, I keep seeing the words thrown around sometimes when applying, but never know if it includes me. If I work in an EOE I don't want to have to pretend to be in the closet.

Not in Arkansas...

In California it is illegal to discriminate against LGBT people in housing. employment, ect.

In the U.S. it would depend on the state or city. It is not a law in Michigan, but in many cities it is. GM, Ford, Chrysler, Dow Chemical, Kellog, Whirlpool, Steelcase, and Herman Miller, are all Michigan based companies that get a perfect score of 100 on the HRC corporate equality index.

One other thing about the phrase Equal Employment Opportunity. That is the name of a federal government commission. Every employer in the U.S. can use those words because they are required to be compliant with U.S. law. Sexual orientation is not among the protected classes of the EEOC. Those state and local laws that have added sexual orientation are laws outside of and in addition to the EEOC.

When looking at whether a company has a nondiscrimination policy, we should take it with a grain of salt. Saks Fifth Avenue is currently being sued by a transgender woman who claims Saks dismissed her for refusing to dress and act more masculine. In one of the motions filed by Saks to have the case dismissed, the company claimed that although there was nondiscrimination policy that included gender identity, they were not bound by it because an employee handbook is not an employment contract. In other words, it's just some nice words that mean nothing. This is why we need a federal law.
