Madrid is simply GREAT ! I live in Alicante, south Spain. Eash time I travel to Madrid, it is a real adventure. The city is full of bars and pubs. Do not miss Chueca, just few steps away from the central avenue Gran Via.

I’ve been a few times. Well, I live in Spain. I love it. There’s loads to do and see. Get a good guide: I usually use the Rough Guide but have the Insight Guide to Madrid, which is good. I’m not really into art. El Greco must have been on acid or something and Picasso does nothing for me. Plaza Mayor is a must, beautiful square with fascinating history and lots of interesting places nearby too. The Retiro is nice too. If you have time to get about outside Madrid Salamanca and Segovia are architectural gems, really interesting small cities. Toledo is spoilt by the traffic which thunders through its narrow streets. Chueca is the gay centre of Madrid: OK and very central but some of the bars are very posy: you can find cheap accommodation in Chueca. Have a good trip.
