I just binge watched all of Queer as Folk
#1
over the last week and a half, and damn that was an emotional roller coaster. I did not expect it to be so good. I was so enthralled I couldn't get myself to do anything else.

I will say I hoped for David to come back at some point, if not for an episode to cause chaos with Ben. I did like Ben, just not as much as David. David had a lot of room for personal growth and I wanted to see it.

I also didn't care for the final season too much. Everything made sense, but it felt a tad unfinished. I couldn't care less for J.T. and Rage, but I wanted to know how everything ended with Prop 14, and was upset at Mel and Linds for leaving, especially after Mel saying she doesn't run from bullies, when that is exactly what she did. There are so many other things I could talk about like parallels with my life and some of the characters, but I don't want to make this post go crazy long.

I really couldn't get into Looking even though I wanted to like it. But I've liked what I watched of Queer as Folk.

I think it could be a matter of "relatability".
QAF had characters spanning a broader range in age..
The characters in Looking portray gay life late 20's and older..

I felt like all the characters in Looking were just too... I don't know, precious. I never saw the second season, maybe it got better. After the first season I just didn't really care about any of the characters.

With QAF I got invested and cared about the characters. They weren't just diverse in age, they were also diverse in what it means to be gay. Like there's campy guys, there's nerdy guys, masculine gays... I mean they were each sort of exaggerated, but it was a diverse portrayal at least. Looking is like, I get it. You're handsome and cool and fairly wealthy and so are all your friends. The one guy who doesn't really fit that gets treated like a dick - from the start. The main guy is just bland/self absorbed.... In my perspective, I should say.

That was an awesome post..
I think you described what made the show work ..

Personally I couldn't decide on a favorite character in QAF..
I was pretty much fascinated with the dynamic aspects of the show..

They covered poverty, wealth, infidelity, monogamy, sickness, nightlife, over achievement, Porn , Drugs, sex..

I honestly can't say any of those characters mirrored my life..
but the circumstances definitely hit close to home..

I'm sure there are writers somewhere camping out in a room cooking up the next big series...
