And it would be possible now if we didnt have religions slowing the science for centuries starting from 1200ad. Lucky there were strong people questioning religious stuff... But we lost few centuries for fairytales...

another way for interstellar travel to take place is to distort space itself! you might wonder how this could be done but think of space-time as a flat rubber fabric, if you put an object dense enough to rip through its foundations, it could create a "wormhole" that could take you places! but since the universe is theoretically an ever expanding sphere of collective energy, i doubt that space could be flat, so pinpointing your destination wouldn't be that hard.
