2 years after moving out they try and collect debt

So after 2 years of having lived outside of this apartment complex they are trying to fine me and my roommates almost $400 for replacing the carpet. Isn't this a little too long to wait to start collecting debt?

I never once received any notifications about the debt until recently, and my ex-roommates have not either. They continue to call me every few days, (albeit they are asking for my roommate and not me) which this is apparently against the law, and when I go to pay it there is a collection fee of $7.50. What the complete **** is this ****?

Is it a debt collector or is it the landlord?

I think the statute of limitations for that might be something like 2 years... However, sounds like you might need to contact an attorney... You'll definitely want to have a copy of the lease you signed on so on... varies state by state... Lots of questions come to mind: did they give you your deposit back when you left? Did they specify what the damage was? Whose name was the lease in? Are you sure this isn't some kind of scam from someone not related to the complex? Did you talk to the management company of the apartment? Something doesn't seem right here, that is for sure.
