The sand dunes of Mars

Could almost be the title of a science fiction book or film but no, these are astonishingly clear photos taken on the surface of the planet. Looks pretty inhospitable.

i've been meaning to post something along these lines here myself. i recently bought this amazing book:



it is one of the most amazing books in my library now. it makes up a veritable journey on Mars looking through the pages of that book.

Noachis Terra:



Victoria Crater: Opportunity Rover explored this crater for whole 2 years! it circled around it approximately to 1/4 of it, and then descended down into the crater and spent the 2 years there. in fact, the Opportunity Rover itself is visible on this very picture, at approximately 10 o'clock position as a tiny dark dot (you have to enlarge to see it):

these online versions don't even do these views justice. these photos are a lot more amazing in the book, which is huge. i am really amazed by the content inside, i didn't expect it to be of this high quality.

Mars is a very versatile planet, a lot more so than one might expect from afar.

the book is not just pictures, though, it also explains Martian climate, seasons, composition, breakdown of different areas, and our different missions to the planet. it's this incredible collection of information, invaluable and precious. but yeah, it's true the planet is very inhospitable.

this last view of sunset on Mars left me speechless when i first laid my eyes on it; it brought tears to my eyes... it's one of the most moving images i've seen in my lifetime.
