The thing is, it shouldn't even be necessary to tip, the waiters should get their salary from their boss not from the customers......

That's probably true, of course not the point of the video but... In the US most waiters/waitresses make a minimum of $2.13/hr, some more a little more... Employers are supposed to make up the difference if the waitress doesn't make the equivalent of minimum wage, although some don't...

I always tip well, unless their service was bad. One person explained to me that the purpose of a tip was to ensure good service...I don't know that it is always true, most people don't tip very well...that or I hang out with cheap people.

Either way, you're either giving the money to waitress or giving it to the owner...

Good luck getting the employers doing that.


As for me, joke on a tv show aside, I deem it appropriate to just tip the waiter because I don't know whether the employers is doing anything for them.

This is true a lot of the time. I waited tables for 20 years. If you go to a restaurant regularly, tipping well, or at least adequately will go a long way. Since waiters make most of their money off tips, they are usually keenly aware of who tips well and who tips very poorly. And they all talk amongst themselves about this. So if you stiff a waiter and go back to the same restaurant, even if you get a different server, it's likely they will know about it.

I and most of the waiters I worked with don't go crazy giving good tippers better service, nor do we give lousy service to lousy tippers; the nature of table waiting doesn't allow that, but we will do little things: There are many little decisions servers have to make daily. If someone orders a salad and the salad bin is almost empty we have a choice between using the old, watery lettuce or getting out a fresh batch. If there are three pots of coffee on, which one do we use? The fresh one? Or do we use one of the older ones? Being a good or bad tipper can influence these things.

If you're a great tipper and you order extra gravy, sometimes the waiter will ask the cook to add a little more. If you're a lousy tipper, he may not, especially if he's busy.

And then there are the angry vindictive waiters. They don't last long in the business, but beware: you never know when one of them will be waiting on you. Restaurant workers spitting in food (or worse) is NOT an urban legend.

Being nice and respectful to your server is frequently almost as appreciated as a good tip. Conversely, being a total dickhead will get you, at best, the watery, old lettuce or the bottom of a pot of coffee. At worst, you could end up with a booger in your sandwich.
