Any Architecture/History Buffs That Might Help Me?
#11
Based on the picture provided and quick research I've done the architecture is that of the neo-Georgian/neo-federal style. At the same time of the building the neo-medieval style was also being done by Slee and Bryson. Based on my educated guess the crest you see is perhaps the medieval style being worked in some sort of fashion into the Georgian/federal style of those buildings. Either that or it's some sort of marker left behind by Slee and Bryson.

In regards to the former of those two guess here's a link: http://www.livingplaces.com/NY/Kings_Cou...trict.html

It is very unlikely to be a fleur de lys.
Brooklyn has prominent Dutch and English roots. But it was never a French colony.
Plus if it is a fleur de lys then i would bet my big toe that it's not the Lefferts family crest.

Wheat makes a lot more sense. The wheat makes obvious sense for Brooklyn. But it's also a symbol for wealth and prosperity so a merchant family may well adopt it on their crest.

As for the poppy are you sure it wasn't a rose?

That would make more sense. Rose=wealth poppy=hope.

*edit* Sorry I just released I could be totally wrong. I'm a total history buff but I really haven't explored U.S. history. I'm drawing on a knowledge of medieval European Heraldry but for all I know there are massive differences. *edit*

But keep me posted please.

Thanks guys for all the input, I wasn't expecting as much help as I'm getting here!

I gave the tour Sunday and I put it out there to the tour takers. It's definitely a fleur de lys. It must be just for stylistic purposes because that neighborhood doesn't have a strong French connection. And it did look like a poppy to me (the link you shared TigerLover isn't working for me though. But someone on the tour said that poppies did have a connection to the Netherlands, probably what starlight pointed out too.

Anyway I tried to take a picture as I was leading a tour, holding my notes, and a binder of photos. I wasn't going to be able to get it casually and quickly as I wanted to, so I come to you guys empty handed. But I give the tour again in a few weeks and before I do I'll go back and snap some photos to show the historical society as well as you guys.

Again, thanks for help, interest, and links. Cody - I wish I'd found that site before I wrote my tour, that has a lot of the content I went over and would have been cut my research time down for sure.

D'awwww

Ah well it was worth a try.
Guess there is a difference between a 16th century system of symbols enforced by the pope and the crests on a house in modern day Brooklyn. Who'd of thought it.
