Yes, London is among the most expensive cities in the world especially when it comes to accommodation. A flat share would really be your only option. I know of someone who pays 300 pounds sterling a week to share a single room. Business is worried that the high price of rents is driving all the bright people away.

You could try advertising in loot.com or even Craig's list. There is also a gay friendly agency that I will post here once I can remember what it's called.
