Everyone was quite rightly, concerned about the ancient city of Palmyra but little has been reported abut the new town. The city was made up of traders, shops, restaurants and hotels to cater to the tourist visiting the wonderful ancient ruins. There is no tourism now. Many of the inhabitants fled when IS took the city leaving the IS militants to wreak havoc on the new town although a few brave souls are returning to try to start again. Little is left now, every building has been damaged or raised to the ground.
These few crude photos (taken from my TV screen) show just a little of the devastation wrought by IS.
