Take a trip back to 1931 New York with this very clever photo-based animation.

Now that's some good use of tech!

I reckon Emil will be all over this.

Yes, I am all over it, and yes, its very interesting, but a lot of those pictures are not NYC.

Just saying.

The interior of Penn Station looks beautiful animated though - thats a place I really wish I could have seen.

One has a sign that says East Boston Tunnel in it. I'm assuming that's Boston. The Capitol Building is in DC. That train station with the locomotive on the street is not in New York. A lot of that rail stuff doesn't look right, like the train turntable thing... Those heavy industrial scenes. I don't know.

The Metropolitan Life Insurance building, Central Park, old Penn Station, Saint Patrick's Cathedral, Saint Paul's spire, the Queensboro Bridge...Those all are NY, but some of the others I don't think are. Like National City Dairy Co and Peoples Drug Store. The last one with the York sign flashing... That doesn't look like it's in NYC.

But to answer your question I don't know where those others are from. It'd be interesting to see the source photos.

The text below the URL says:

" Visual effects artist seccovan turned a handful of old photos from pre-war New York (and a few from Washington D.C.) and turned them into stunning animated works of art. The final product is so flawless that if you told us we were looking out a window at 1930's New York we would just smile and nod."

Hahaha, fair enough, although if you would have asked me, I would have assumed someting called Penn station would be in..you know, PA

But yes, I reckon you'd be able to tell things apart, much like I would here, so I'm taking your skepticism very seriously, especially about the ambiguous ones.

Haha, as you should - I showed this to my nyc history buff co-workers and boss and we figured out the source photos and locations:

The first photo is clearly NYC
Second photo is also clearly NYC with the Metropolitan Life Insurance Building in the background as the landmark.
Third, also clearly NYC with Saint Patricks Cathedral as the landmark.
Fourth - Its Boston

Fifth- Washington DC (Washington, D.C., circa 1921. "People's Drug Store, 7th and E Sts." National Photo Company Collection glass negative. according to the source)
Sixth - also DC (Washington, D.C., circa 1915. "Weller's drug store, Eighth & I streets S.E.")
Seventh - DC again (according the library of congress where we found the source photo)
Eighth - Back to NYC (Doyers street in Chinatown)
[Image: Chinatown-Chinese-Tuxedo-Restaurant-Bar-...18-001.jpg]
Ninth - Colombus Ohio Court House
[Image: ohio_cthse_columbus1.jpg]
Tenth - Wilmerding, PA (The machine shop for the Westinghouse Airbrake Company)
Eleventh - Plymouth, PA (The Plymouth Coal Breaker)
Twelvth - Bethlehem-Fairfield Shipyards, Baltimore
[Image: 8e10850u-1024x773.jpg]
Thirteenth - Penn Station, NYC (So named for the Pennsylvania Railroad Insertnamehere , not the state )
Fourteenth - Again, NYC with Saint Paul's spire as the landmark
Fifteenth - NYC, The Queensboro Bridge
Sixteenth - Detroit, Detroit Rubber Works
[Image: 1.jpg]
Seventeenth - The Capitol building, DC
Eighteenth - NYC, Central Park
Nineteenth - The York Theater in DC
[Image: tumblr_novrkrmitv1sygg4wo1_1280.jpg]

Again, its a beautiful animation, and I don't mean to detract anything from it. But thats what, 8 out of 19 that are actually NYC?
