The saddest part is that Russian athletes who do not win are often punished by those in power. If they win, they are rewarded. If they fail, they feel the wrath of the powers that be. They don't need that kind of pressure on top of everything else.

That might possibly be true but don't forget that for years the Russians have won totally unwarranted gold medals because they have been doped up to the eyeballs sponsored by the State, so it's about time they faced up to the reality of sport. Cheat and it will eventaully come back and bite you very hard on the arse!
