So, the person who wrote it went to a school where they didn't teach him/her grammar or maths.

That is a terrible tactic. Anyone who's taken basic mathematics should catch that right away and I'd be on Yelp in a New York minute with a picture of that receipt. I'm one of the more chill people eating out, I tip well, I don't ask for a bunch of requests that are a pain to fulfill and I'm always polite to the server...but seeing something like that would piss me off... Now that being said their POS software might have a big in it but my guess it is deliberate. Should be obvious that a $9.50 tip on a $20.50 tab is damn near 50%... That's just deceiving customers, if you want to deceive people go work for the IRS.

@Inbetweendseams, I COMPLETELY and emphatically agree with you that 20% is a good tim. I also am sure that the tip in on the total of the check before tax. There is no reason that anyonw should feel it necessary to tip any percentage of the ax charged.
I worked for some time in the hospitality industry and can assure you that any server who stays i the business is being decently compensated. Otherwise they leave, and quickly.
And LONDONER, it would seem that the most popular subject at our hypothetical school would be "entrepreneurship," otherwise known as the boondoggle.

LJay the only time I don't tip well is if they are just a trainwreck, which is seldom the case...
