Interesting photo from 1956

Depicts a 5 Mb hard drive being loaded into an airplane. We now buy multi TB hard drives, no larger than an old cassette tape, that have approximately 200,000 times as much storage as the one in the photo.

Some drum drives were so large and massive that if the bearings seized, the drum would remove itself from the housing and go through a wall or two before stopping.

Can we even imagine what technology will be like in 2050?

You can buy an 8 TB hard drive...these days and for really not all the expensive..

What the above was called at the time was the IBM 350 Disk Unit, the RAMAC... which stood for Random Access Method of Accounting and Control... was part of the IBM 305 computer system...

edit:

If you really like this retro stuff here's another film going a bit more in depth...

Sometimes I think about my first pc, almost 2GB... Now you can have 128 GB on a micro sd card...
And recently I talked about this with my mom, in her first office she had an entire room for a single computer. XD

You can get one that is 256 GB but be prepared to pay $200 +

Regular sized SD cards can get past 512 GB but they're crazy expensive...

Also be aware a lot of things don't support anything higher than 32 GB...

Also it's not easy to lose a computer, but you cannot say the same about a SD card XD

Yes, and the rooms had to be air conditioned to disperse the generated heat.
