Why we need pornography.

A podcast from Intelligence Squared,
Is porn not actually necessary?
https://soundcloud.com/intelligence2/por...ed-society

Hooray for porn! What would we be without it? Bored, repressed, frustrated. Porn allows the timid to indulge fantasies they’d never live out in real life and the adventurous to experiment with new forms of pleasure. Now that it has stepped down from the top shelf and waltzed across the internet we can all enjoy it. All we need to do is stop pretending it’s something dirty and come straight out and salute it.
Or maybe not. Porn after all is selling a lie: that women are always eager to engage in extreme practices, that bodies are always tanned and buffed, orgasms explosive. Isn’t this a recipe for frustration and disappointment? And to attract the restless voyeur, porn is always having to up the ante – cyber-sex is getting ever more degrading and extreme. Men are finding it harder to be satisfied with their real world partners, women are feeling inadequate and pressured to live up to the cyber-competition – this is the reality of pornland.
So which is it – the great liberator of the libido or a blight on human intimacy? Listen to pornographic film maker Anna Arrowsmith and erotica expert Dr Clarissa Smith, square up to renowned feminist Germaine Greer and addiction specialist Dr Robert Lefever.

Because without it some people wouldn' enjoy the happiness of sexual desires!!!
Not all the places in the world are gay friendly.
In some cities there is a huge homophobia or worse homosexuality is against the law.
Porn is selling the easy and without inhabition definite sexual lust. The fantasy that everything can happen without remorse. That's why people are so addicted to it.
You dont have to wonder oh "Does he like me?" "how to tell him to to that"?
In porn it happens even if it is scripted.
In reality someone may kiss you and after ten minutes he remembers he has something else to do.(lame but it happens a lot)

Quite true, but I don't know if we can call it the happiness of sexual desire. At least it's an outlet for sexual desire and frustration.

If we call it the happiness of visual sexual desire?

I have porn in my head, so it doesn't really matter much one way or another. It is a product of the male libido; created from men for other men. It's good to watch it for a change, but I don't think porn is something to idealize. It's just porn. Nothing more, nothing less.

Well my thoughts are that porn does serve the very purpose you mentioned. After all I am single. However, in my personal preference most porn is well not my cup of tea... Maybe I am too serious after all? There is some porn I like but I usually go for what is more realistic, like guys in real life who I find attractive...

At the same time it does precondition us to having high expectations from our partners being fit for be able to fuck like in the porno. Frankly, many of us aren't super models, we're not 9's 10's (5 being average). It is a blow to one's ego when you're told, meh you're ok, but that guy in the porno is pretty hot.

In my personal experience, it does seem that the cute guys or the "pretty boys" are often lacking in personality, although I can't speak for everyone who is falls into that category (which that category is by my own definition).

That all being said when I met someone who was both, smart, handsome and seemed to have a good personality I was just floored because here lately I come across guys who I am not sexually attracted to but are nice guys and I like hanging with but I just don't have that "feeling" I get when I really like someone. To me that is just critical and I feel bad because how do you tell someone that hey I like hanging with you but I don't see us being partners, ever. That's my current situation anyway.

So no I don't think porn is awful, I think it is like anything else, you can become addicted to it, it can ruin things just like alcohol and so on. So it isn't any different that there is a point where there is too much of it... At the same time can be a good coping mechanism or even as a means to keep one from making bad choices...

Why the black/white argument? Porn can be fun, a relief  and downright evil?
A simple issue like cock size, for instance, can take on unexpected importance. A generation raised to expect partners to be equiped like elephants are left wondering why their average size attracts so few. Then we have young teenagers falling for advertisements - ‘Increase the size of your gear in a month’ , adverts that leave them frustrated with an inferiority complex when the recommended englargement trick doesn’t work. On the other hand a small percentage of porn can help save the young from making stupid moves when they first start to get their rocks off.
There are some aspects of gay male porn though I find really puzzling. A lot of it gives me the impression it’s produced by straights. The almost universal feature of rimming puzzles me too. If you type ‘Gay porn without rimming’ into a search engine all that will come up is porn featuring rimming.

Then there’s the seriously dangerous stuff such as snuff porn involving the murder of participants, sometimes not acted and very much for real. My view is all such productions should be universally banned. Call me a prude if you want.
It’s also interesting how porn search engines operate but that’s another subject.

Off topic but I’m reminded of my reaction to the first porn I ever watched featuring two American farm boys in the back of a utility ( what do you call them in the US? A pickup?) The line that sent my into a fit of the gibbles was “Hey buddy, why don’t you shove your big cock right up my arehole’ Next day at work delivering mail I kept muttering that line to myself and giggling. From behind a fence a guy stood up and told me “ I would mate but I don’t think my missus would approve” The strange thing is it turned out we’d had a brief fling many years prior before he decided the females of our species were his thing.
