Biden hosts Pride Month celebration at White House, voices LGBTQ+ support

President Joe Biden welcomed hundreds to the White House on Saturday for a delayed Pride Month celebration aimed at showing LGBTQ+ people that his administration has their back at a time when advocates are warning of a spike in discriminatory legislation, particularly aimed at the transgender community, sweeping through statehouses.

The event, which the administration described as the largest Pride event hosted at the White House, was initially scheduled for Thursday, but was postponed because of poor air quality from hazardous air flowing in from Canadian wildfires. But the haze that blanketed a huge swath of the East Coast this past week had lifted over the nation’s capital, allowing the president and first lady Jill Biden to hold their South Lawn party.

“So today, I want to send a message to the entire community — especially to transgender children: You are loved. You are heard. You’re understood. And you belong,” Biden said.

A very postive message, but I have to say, I don't really follow American politics. Do you think Biden is doing enough?

He's doing more than the prior president, but that's a low spot, so you can't judge by that.

The trans community seems to really be under attack now.

I don't think he's doing all he could. I also think this pattern is a convenient distraction that gets used politically for false leverage between dissident groups. I certainly hold out hope we'll look back and see we've progressed more than we've waned with inclusion, acceptance, and equity.

There's actually no "seem" about it, and it is all queer culture in the very real and dangerous mess that's happening. Book banning, actually oppression law passing everywhere, Drag, Trans, it's pervasive because the asshats have come out of the woodwork during the dark reign of right wing momentum. I canNOT wait for the lights to be turned on enough to drive that infestation right back into the closet where it belongs.
