andyTeam Pride: How Gay Athlete Davis Atkin Is Changing Australian Hockey

Davis Atkin, a midfielder for Australia's national field hockey team, the Kookaburras, is making waves not just with his skills on the pitch but also with his powerful advocacy for gay inclusion. During Pride Month, Atkin's teammates proudly wore rainbow socks, a clear statement of support for their colleague and a testament to the evolving landscape of professional sports.

Atkin's path to this moment hasn't been without its difficulties. In 2021, he was accidentally outed to his university coach, leading to a "pretty dark place," as he confided to Outsports a year later. Despite these challenges, Atkin persevered, earning 20 caps for the Kookaburras, including a recent memorable win against England.

The team's unified display of rainbow socks, shared on Instagram, resonated deeply with Atkin. "I really appreciate everyone being as inclusive as they are, and this was as simple as wearing socks," he told Hockey Australia. For Atkin, this seemingly small gesture carries immense weight, potentially inspiring other aspiring athletes who identify as gay. "If I had grown up and seen my heroes run out in rainbow socks, that would have been immense, showing me that people at the top level are like me," he explained.

Atkin, now 24, also shared a compelling image of himself wrapped in a Pride flag, accompanied by a heartfelt caption: "Being able to run out on to the pitch with Pride socks together as a team was something truly special. The inclusivity, the support and the joy in this group made it all feel surreal." He eloquently articulated the broader impact: "You can’t be what you can’t see, and even something as simple as rainbow socks can be a powerful sign to someone out there that they are seen, valid and belong."

Atkin's bravery in sharing his story, combined with his team's visible allyship, sends a vital message that authenticity and belonging are increasingly valued at the highest levels of sport.
Note: No trees were destroyed in the sending of this contaminant free message. However, I do concede, a significant number of electrons may have been inconvenienced.
