So next semester i will be finishing my associates in science and i have no idea what i want to study after that. I live with my mom but am trying to move out if it becomes possible, maybe move in with somebody if i meet someone nice. More or less i am sick of school and need a break but i need a good job/money too. several people close to me tell me that i have modeling potential and i wanted to know if it would be a good idea/bad idea to take a break from school and give that a try and save up money while i figure out a good career. I don't know what the money is like in that field or even what kind of jobs there are for that kind of stuff. If anybody has any info that'd be much appreciated.

Anyway, I know what its like to finish a degree and be sick of school. Take a break, its nice to get to see the world and to have time to find yourself.

. The thing about modeling is that its a pain in the ass. and not a good one either. In order to get some decent shows or shoots you have to have a portfolio. atleast a minimun of six feet tall and good facial feutures. When i started out i did alot of grad and wedding shows for tux's and it took off from there but modeling is pretty much the gayest thing ever. No offense to anyone.

While in Japan I was offered the experience to model. I was horrible at it. I was so nervous on the couple auditions I went on I had to be totally stoned before going thru the door.

My roommate was 6'4". Blonde, blue eyes, very thin with a bit of muscle... and totally in love with himself. He was pretty successful. Dont know how much he walked away with but he was busy. He did everything - runway, mags, tv...

It is kinda weird work also. You have to have more self confidence than anything. Really good looks and a perfect body help. And there is a certain look. I never understood the look. I would never think Mr. A was model material but get him in make up, clothes, and the photographer captures something one doesnt see in real dimensions.

I got on the other side with my partner a mens wear designer and witnessed the same thing. There was a look you didnt see until the spotlight hit and then WOW.

curt is also correct about having a portfolio. If you really have the goods you wont have to pay for a portfolio and a photographer would be happy to work with you especially if the photographer needs some modeling work to add to his/her portfolio. Often recent art school grads are interested in getting some work done and will often pair up with new models.

Maybe you can already notice but if not... It takes a while to get a portfolio and thus work. Big jobs just dont want to take the risk that you will do a good job or not. A big mag shoot can cost a quarter million dollars!

Oh, btw, there is always porn but I dont have much experience with that sort of modeling :biggrin:

My advice is that if you are sick of school and no idea what you want to study, then for the moment don't bother. Furthering your education is, generally speaking, a good idea but if neither your head or your heart isn't in it, then you aren't going to do well. Taking a break from education whilst you figure out what you want to do with your life (and how you are going to get there), might well be a good idea. As for earning some money whilst you take that break, as far as I can tell modelling is not a reliable way of doing it, by all means get a few shots of you done, send them in to agencies and see what happens but don't let that stop you looking for and finding 'proper' work.

P.S. When I say for the moment don't bother, I don't mean your current studies, I mean don't bother applying for further study at the moment if neither your head nor heart are in it.

I would say to make sure you're not going into further education out of a sense of duty. It's something i regret nearly every day. It's okay to take time out, and you can benefit from it so much more than I did by rushing into a degree programme just becuase i was good at the subjects.

That said, i'm now living in Spain and won't have to do a single day's work for the next ten months or so...

So swings and roundabouts, really. Things always have a way of working out in the end.

if yoiu actually going through with the modeling find the scoutings your self. If you do go to an agent thought make sure they have a reputation so your not paying them for a gig every now and then. modeling isnt all that bad its just alot of dieting and glits and glamour ... yes even for men.

hey thanks for all the advice, curt-88 especially. lol i know i wouldn't mind the dieting cuz i diet a lot already so that'd be nothing new. I'll have to do some research and see what kind of agents are around. i know it's not something easy to do but it just seems like something i would really enjoy. If you have any tips/pointers/etc. feel free to message me, i'd definitely appreciate it.
