Save Me
#1
I have just watched a film on You Tube, Save Me. (Originally released 2007, I make no claim as to whether it has been properly or improperly uploaded to You Tube.) Rarely, am I moved by a film but this really did it for me. It gives a real insight into those gays who seek to become straight through religion and those who try to help them. A very sensitive portrait, despite so many opportunities to be stereotypical it manages not to be. Judith Light gives an outstanding performance as Gayle, who runs the Christian 'house', such a nuanced performance that you can disagree Gayle and everything she stands for and yet I felt such deep sympathy for that Gayle. I very strongly recommend that you watch it.

My Heart really goes out to the Scott guy. He truly is in love and the gayle lady for some reason can't seem to understand that. Love is love really.

Yeah I watched the whole thing and I'm happy to see at the ending that Mark decides to continue living his life with Christ. Thats the best way to do it and it proves that you can be gay and still Worship God. I'm touched big time.

I love that film but I think I like Prayers for Bobby even more. It is such a powerful film and has a positive message for the future. Sigourney Weaver is amazing. The two films have much in common but in Prayers for Bobby the most prejudiced person reforms and becomes a champion of gay rights. Improbable? No, it's a true story.

Marshy, Don't be so prejudiced.

Peter, I haven't seen Prayers for Bobby so I can't really comment however I would ask you what new insight that film give you, Save Me certainly gave me a new insight into the motivations of some who operate ex-gay programmes.

Actually, that wasn't what I was referring to (for once Wink )

I was a bit put out by the plot spoiler!

There isn't a huge amount of plot, just a really good character movie. Its not about what the characters do but why they do it?

Hi Fred, Sorry about the delay in replying to your question. The insight I got from Prayers for Bobby is that people are capable of change in the most extraordinary ways and to an extent that you would really barely credit. But this is a true story and became a very public issue, so you have to believe what you see. I don't want to tell you much more in case you want to see the film. I saw it on Youtube. It is a tragic story but amazing hope comes out of the tragedy in the end. The whole plot is a flash back. You see the tragic ending at the beginning but the hope that this generates only becomes apparent as the storyline develops.
