Firstly, it is not a sin, but I have heard it referred to as onanism, which could make us all onanists.

Onanism.

The term comes from the story of Onan in the Bible (Genesis 38:7-9).

In the Biblical Book of Genesis, Onan was the second son of Judah.
According to the text, after God had killed Onan's older brother Er, Judah asked Onan to have sexual intercourse with Tamar and impregnate her, the widow of Er, so that the child or children could be declared to be Er's heir(s). Onan had sex with Tamar, but performed coitus interruptus each time, spilling his "seed" (semen) on the ground, so that there would not be any offspring which he could not claim as his own. The passage states that this displeased God, who killed Onan as his punishment.

What was God mad about, the sexual act, no offspring or the marriage law?

In Judaism, a levirate marriage (Hebrew: yibbum) is mandated by the Torah (Pentateuch) (Deuteronomy 25:5-10) which obliges a brother to marry the widow of his childless deceased brother, with the firstborn child being treated as that of the deceased brother. However, there is another provision known as halizah (Deuteronomy 25:9-10), which enables either party to avoid the levirate marriage. Later authorities in Jewish law (Talmudic period) strongly discouraged yibbum in favor of haliza.

The church can re-defined the law on marriage but the State can not?


Since ancient times, both Jewish and Christian authors have interpreted this passage as a condemnation of masturbation. Most modern biblical scholars, however, say that Onan's sin was to violate the rules of levirate marriage, a Biblical law which states that a childless widow must marry her late husband's brother.

So masturbation was a sin but has been repealed?
