Do you need sex?

Just as a point of information, the Roman Catholic church had existed for several centuries when the Pope decided he wanted his priests to be celibate. Celibacy is not a biblical commandment.

I wonder what the "logic" behind that "commandment" was. The "official" line is, as I understand it, is so that the priesthood can direct all their love towards God. I suspect the real reason is a lot more earthly than that. (Call me cynical if you like, but I fear that the Pope wasn't getting any, so his priesthood was going to be denied too)

They are not different, except they are often either in denial or just cynically disobedient. The man who befriended me and betrayed my feelings (gosh! I've never entertained that concept before ...) when I first came out was/is a Catholic priest. although not currently working as such. He has been given special dispensation to put his energies into other good works. He has also had to live with severe and recurring bouts of depression over the years. A friend of mine in southern Europe was also, for many years, an active and committed Mormon, married with children, in denial and after coming out met a Catholic priest online who seemed to have no scruples whatsoever. This priest would organise hook-ups, threesomes and orgies with men and by the sound of it was not all that careful about making his activities that much of a secret. By contrast he is still an active parish priest.

The news coming out of Rome in the past couple of days seems to have gripped Italy too

I must say that faith is something very powerful and when one truly believes in certain things, he is able to go very far if he wants to. I myself have considered living following the ultimate rules of the Bible а few times because some books, stories and speeches are extremely inspiring and convincing. What I'm trying to say is that people who decide to become priests are convinced that what they are about to be doing for the rest of their lives is something worth giving up their desires. And many of them continue believing in that. It is a form of denial, but...it is their choice.

However, I am speaking much more from the view point of Orthodox Christians. I think here, with our church, it is much more about one's free will and right to choose whether to believe in God or not. Moreover, here priests of the lowest rand, if I can say this, are allowed to have a family. I don't know if it is the same with Catholics, but I think that being a Catholic priest is much harder than being an Orthodox priest. And because of all the restrictions on their lives, Catholic priests are more likely to give in to things beyond what they are allowed to do/have.

here I'm not trying to criticize the Catholic church or be hateful. I'm just sayin. Plus, Orthodox priests in Bulgaria are totally corrupt [correct word?], but that is a completely different topic.

I really, really don't need sex. It's a wonderful act, particularly when done with someone you are greatly connected with in a romantic sense, but it's really not a big deal for me. Then again, whatever sex drive I may have had I lost a long while ago. Tongue

Having said all this, I DO think that if you are in a relationship it is needed. What I was talking about concerned a sense of personal necessity, not necessarily inter-personal necessities. Smile

As for the couple, it's their loss. Smile

Yes , due to my partners medical reasons , and since I came out have had no sexual contact whatsoever ( which i have no complaints )

Sex is only part of a relationship , it is possible to have a relationship without it , but found it can be frustrating sometimes .

I think that when you are a virgin and have not, therefore, tried sex, it is much easier to live without it despite the need/desire. It's like, if you've never tried doing drugs, you'll never need more and it will never affect your life.

As for cuddling and sex only with the right person and in a relationship, I am delighted to hear that there still are boys with such thoughts left, never mind that they are gay. Boys actually have a lot more freedom in choosing when to have sex for the first time than girls. Off topic, sorry.
