From the 2 examples you've given, I prefer the "sad" one. The happy one is overwhelming to me and it actually makes me even sadder

Yes. It always reminds me of the little house I grew up in out in the countryside, and one Christmas it snowed and the fields surrounding us were just a blanket of snow. It just makes me think of happy, simpler, magical times.
