Explosions In the Sky is absolutely awesome. i am getting into a lot of obscure stuff lately, i have just been introduced to the musician Scott Walker who has some really amazing experimental work. i am huge fan of Brian Eno he is kind of the father of electronic music in away. Ravi Shankar is ABSOLUTELY stellar hindu spiritual music his music just takes me to another place altogether. Aphex Twin is really good ambient music i recommend "Rarities and B-sides" you can listen to a lot of music on a website called grooveshark they have just about everything it is a free streaming music website without commercials, and you can search for just about anything and it is all there even a lot of rare stuff. they have a ton of unreleased Nirvana on there.

if you like spooky ambient/goth music check out Coil, current 93, nurse with wound, mark almond, David Gahan, and depeche mode,

for some stranger but chill music check out Dirty Projectors, Kayo Dot, Animal Collective, and Panda Bear, excellent noise rock bands. My Bloody Valentine "loveless" can be awe inspiring though it is challenging to listen to. Jesus and Mary Chain is wonderful dissonance. Echo and the Bunnymen is an excellent post-punk/new wave band. Gang of Four is great, so is Wire, and Nick Cave. also Adam and the Ants, Soft Cell, and The Cure ( albums "Seventeen Seconds", "Faith"," Pornography" , & "Disintegration") is amazing, if you like Muse you will love those 4 albums.

if you are into country / bluegrass /Folk you may want to check out Rev Paytons Big Damn Band, Hank Williams I, II, & III, Old Crow Medicine show are all phenomenal examples of contemporary roots music. i love Johnny cash.

i know you said no "pop" music, but a lot of stuff by Phill Spector is very enjoyable if you are in a 50's sort of mood. i often like to transition from 50's-60's stuff into Funk like George Clinton and the P-Funk.

if you are into punk at all i recommend Bad Brains, the Business, Black Flag, Subhumans, Partisans, Anti-Nowhere League, Angelic Upstarts, Blitz (good old fashion Oi), Flat Tires, Sex Pistols, New York Dolls, The Dolls, Chaos Uk, Regan Youth, Exploited, The Damned, DI, TSOL, Grave 45, Velvet Underground (pre-punk), The Clash, GG Allin, Gogol Bordello, Misfits, The Cramps, Zero Boys,

more chill indie stuff to look up is Architecture in Helsinki, Belle and Sebastian, Gorkies zygotic mynci, Black Tape For a Blue Girl, Spacemen 3, Secret Chiefs 3, Fleet Foxes, Neutral Milk Hotel, The Apples in Stereo and Super Furry Animals and Blur are all excellent. i like Blind Melon but they are kinda of a hippy band, if you are into that check out Groovatron, Phish, String Cheese Incident, and Grateful Dead, Steely Dan, and Captain Beef Heart.

A few more good rap acts you may not be aware of are Public Enemy, Cool Keith, Handsome Boy Modeling school, Mos Def, Aesop Rock, Talid Kweli, N.E.R.D., Digable Planets, Ghost Face Killah and Murs,

i think that is it for the essentials...

LOL..... Responding to your post makes me realize how much of a music geek i am. i have been HEAVILY involved with music sense well, forever, so i know tons and tons of music. if you take note of everything i have mentioned you will be on your way to being one very cool person.
