Hello dear, take that chance and sit next to him, and then say hi and introduce yourself, then let the conversation go from there. If you don't know what to say, it's always easiest to talk about what you know you have in common, in this case you go to the same school. You could ask him what classes he takes and so forth.
It'll help you to have more confidence if instead of saying this is going to be awkward mess, think instead that by talking to him, you might gain a friendship with him and have fun on the way to school. If for some unlikely reason he doesn't want to be your friend, then you now know and can move on.
