the iphone has built in standard emoji (smiles)

enable them;
Settings->General->KeyBoard->InterNationalKeyBoards->Add New->Emoji
usage;
this places a key toggles the additional keyboard into view like the abc/123 key does for numeric/alpha

I had to end up getting an app in order to use them. Wonder why Apple couldn't have just left it there since the get-go.
