Rhythm & Blues music
#1
I am starting this new musical thread on the Rhythm and Blues music as we have some interest here on this forum.

R & B music originally developed from popular African American music around the 1940's, during the coming decades the music has enlarged to include blues, electric blues as well as gospel and soul music. This type of music has helped the development of Rock & Roll which in turn led to Rock music we know today.

Lets start with this one.

Little Red Rooster" is a classic blues song that has been recorded countless times. Howlin' Wolf recorded "The Red Rooster" in 1961, a song credited to blues arranger and songwriter Willie Dixon, although earlier songs have been cited as inspiration. A variety of performers have interpreted it, including Sam Cooke and The Rolling Stones, who had important record chart successes with the song. Howlin' Wolf's "The Red Rooster/Little Red Rooster" has been acknowledged by the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

I dig some R&B. There's a ton of great songs. Here's one that comes to mind:

#5
Esther Phillips - Home is where the hatred is. [Originally released in 1972]

Esther Phillips was discovered by Johnny Otis, the owner of the Barrelhouse Club. He was impressed by the young 14 year old and added her to his travelling revue, also signed her to Modern Records. Sadly she died in 1984 aged 48.

I can't think of the Stones' version of "Little Red Rooster" without Christopher Bruce's fab choreography Xyxthumbs

#7
Jimmy Nelson - Cry Hard Luck [Originally released in 1954]

#8
The Orioles - Crying In The Chapel [Orginally released in 1959]

The Orioles are generally acknowledged as R&B’s first vocal group.
#9
One of my favorite R&B from Quincy Jones with Ashford and Simpson and Chaka Khan

#10
Bo Diddley - Cadillac [Orginally released in 1961]

He was known as "The Originator" because of his key role in the transition from the blues to rock & roll, influencing a host of legendary acts including Buddy Holly, Jimi Hendrix, The Rolling Stones, The Velvet Underground, The Yardbirds, and Eric Clapton. Accordingly, he was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and received Lifetime Achievement Awards from the Rhythm and Blues Foundation, and a Grammy Award from the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences. He was known in particular for his technical innovations, including his trademark rectangular guitar.
