They moved to Connecticut, where they lived in a one-bedroom apartment while Milliken completed his senior year at Yale University.[1] They had two children: William Milliken Jr., born October 14, 1946, and Elaine Milliken, who was born on June 6, 1948 and died of cancer in 1993.[2] Helen and William Milliken moved to his native Traverse City, Michigan, after his graduation from Yale University in 1946. She raised their two children while William worked for the family business, the now defunct Milliken's Department Store.
You copy and paster! The Milliken family was very popular in Michigan. William Milliken, the former governor, is from a time when there were true moderates in the Republican party. This is what he said in a 2010 interview about current social issues:
"They should continue to be talked about, and they were, to a lesser extent, issues during my governorship. But I’ve always believed strongly in freedom of choice for women. I believe strongly in stem cell research. Those are volatile and difficult subjects. But they were major issues even at my time. I believe that gay marriage is an issue that has been made into a volatile issue and it should not. I believe that freedom of choice for gay marriage is right, and it’s one that we ought to be supportive of. … Stem cell research provides great hope for the future. We ought to be willing to speak out in favor of it. "
