I've never quite understood when Tolkien describes Sauron being "overthrown" or "thrown down" right after his duel with Gil-Galad and Elendil but right before Isilsur gets all choppy choppy cutting his finger. Like, did they kill him (his body anyway) or severely weaken him? I mean they died horrible deaths but they defeated that celestial being? I always took it that it was the chopping bit that did the "death" blow.
