i think he might have actually sent it but was probably just speculating about stuff with his housemate. I think its a bit early in the relationship after 3 dates for you guys to be on completely open terms and maybe you should just give him a chance. Unconditional love takes time to build. Usuallly when you meet someone you'll judge them and see if they're a fit for 'you' or not. He might have just been doing that out loud with his friend and clearly his friend must have said something supportive, and clearly he does like you if he decided to show up again.
