I had to do a fair bit in there when getting my Ubuntu setup, because the settings I needed to change simply were not there in the graphical interface.
True Unix is its own operating system, but mainly used on business servers. In his case it would still be Ubuntu (or by the more general term: Linux).
When I was young there was no graphic interfaces - PC's had DOS (as did Apple, though the 2 had differences), and Businesses/Colleges/Government had Unix or Vax .. they were all 'text only' as far as the basic operating system. .. Oh and stuff like a mouse didn't exist(for general use)..same for the internet!
(Since I can probably count on one hand the number of times I've even turned on my TV this year) Date!!
I think what he's installed on his ThinkPad is DOS (or maybe he doesn't even need to install one). And he would explain to me some technical terms like "complied language" and "scripting language" while I was cooking in the kitchen...Well I forgot the difference...
