It's good that you deleted all of his contact info.
Usually when people stop messaging me after a date, I assume they're not interested and I delete all contact info.
It's hard for people to say "I'm sorry, but I don't want a relationship with you" so instead they try and fade out your life, hoping you take the hint.
I try to be better than that, so when a guy likes me but I don't like him, I'll be frank and say I'd like to just stay friends. A lot of people don't want to be friends with someone they once dated, but I did befriend a really nice guy this way.
Gay or straight, I don't think there's anyway around this. If you want to find a relationship, you're going to have to deal with it.
