I have the misfortune of having to sometimes endure EastEnders as background noise when I'm at home due to others enjoying it. Soaps have had their time due to the lack of interesting story plots and lacking true engagement with real life issues, they either drag something out for months/years longer then they need to and the viewers get bored or they touch on real issues and give it a 2-3 episode timeline and claim they've done a boatload of research.

Also, in real life the poorest people cant even afford much other to drink then tap water, but in a soap everyone can afford several pints at the local pub every evening when they play the poor person story line.
