Biological or not biological, we are still sorry to lose the ones we've loved and learned to love in a family... I'm sorry that he's passed away. Please accept my condolences too, LRB.
It is nice to be able to catch up on some family history, even if it's of people who, somehow, have been added to the family tree by marriage, second marriage, or adoption...
I have an "adopted" brother and an "adopted" sister... people who elected a place in this family and they are important to us and have come up with brotherly and sisterly love, caring and wisdom at the time of my mum's passing. It does help that they are both older than us and they have often been our mentors or minders since we were kids. These relationships are so much better than family feuds.
Hope you aren't suffering too much from the bereavement, but, as you say, the consolation is that your grandpa lived a good life if he was 89, even if he had to suffer the hardships of the war.
