Here in the states Christmas was not celebrated until the Industrial Revolution and the start of consumerism. Then retailers got together to invent the Christmas we have.
Macy's and the rest decided to hijack Thanksgiving as the starting point of the Shopping Season.
The idea that Christmas was a 'religious' holiday is a bit off. The rest of the world that observed it made it into Carnival - bawdy. The only religious observance was mass. The puritans didn't even bother.
Since its inception, the modern tradition has been a retailers holiday, a consumer driven holiday.
