Well Fred, in the animal kingdom its a whole different kettle of fish. As humans we have combatted many issues such as food supply, predators and diseases with technology therefore the population is on the rise dramaticcaly. As for species controlling their own population its not something that is controlled it is totally innate kind of like natural selection. When you apply what we know about animal behaviour, all animals exhibit some form of homosexuality therefore if you think of it rationally same sex attraction acts as a prezygotic mating barrier hindering reproduction. As for the birds, the willow warbler and the chiff chaff are essentially the same bird but over time have developed different mating calls. They can mate and breed sucessfully in the event they do meet up but usually don't because of their different mating calls which act as a prezygotic mating barrier. Basically I'd say homosexuality is perfectly natural, there must be some natural use for it in nature so it's all good. I could delve further into population genetics etc, but its a weekend and I can't be bothered. haha
