Matt, have you heard about the Project 365?
Basically, people take a picture a day, even if they think there is nothing interesting around to bother.
I tried it once, and what I really liked about that time was that I had my camera always at hand. And usually I took many pictures a day, not just one. Sure, they were not good enough to be posted in a magazine, but I grew closer with my camera, I got over of my shyness to carry it around all the time (I have a lens camera not a compact that fits in a pocket) and many of those pictures meant a lot to ME.
I think that's how every photograph has started - he took pictures of the things or events that talked to him. He didn't try to impress others.
You
CAN be a photographer. Even if you start with a cheap camera. Even if you won't show your pictures to anyone at first, even if you feel silly at first for taking a picture of sharpen pencils or a puddle with a nice reflection.
