I did the same thing recently for piano. I'm not great at reading music either, At first I could just locate middle C and then I have to go by the alphabet from there and write all the letters next to the notes. I will say after that I start remembering were more notes are. Also a lot of songs repeat the same notes so from the songs I'm learning, I can at least kind of memorize some other notes just by using them so much.
I'm finding that youtube is great for these kinds of things it's just a matter of finding the good videos but it's helped me quite a lot in some of the songs I'm trying to learn.

Thanks everyone, honestly did not expect such a large response I've made a little bit of progress and played some more using the tutorials found through the website links you shared with me here, though it's now come to my attention that I'd like to have headphones to plug in and wear whilst playing - problem is though I cannot for the life of me find the ones that are designed for the strange port - it's not a 3mm jack but the bigger version that i've forgotten the name of and it isn't written at the port on the keyboard at all which is.. well.. a nuisance, does anyone here know the kind I'd need?

Practice makes perfect I say, I used to play the violin and I gave it up for like 6 years or so, I came back to it and didn't have any idea what I was doing lol, but by going back to it eventually it does come back, I know I'm never going to be a concert violinist but I can play at my own leisure. :-)
